Company Description:

Our work

We employ more than 860 staff and operate from more than 65 locations throughout New Zealand. Through the services we provide and the advocacy work we undertake, we help to transform lives and to enable families, communities, and our society as a whole, to create the conditions in which children and young people can thrive.

With our unique blend of early childhood and social service expertise, we’re able to respond to children and families where they are at, and to provide services for all and more to those who need it most.

Through universal services such as early childhood education, we help children develop skills that set the foundation for a brighter future - whether this is the skills they need to successfully transition to school in their lives or the tools they’ll need to deal with the inevitable challenges that arise from time to time in all our lives.

Our more intensive and specialised social services supported children and families – including a number of the most vulnerable in our country - to deal with challenging and complex issues such as family violence and child abuse and neglect. This work can be around early intervention and involve something as simple as helping a parent to establish daily routines. Or it can mean working intensively over many months with the young men in our residential homes to help them deal with some very challenging behaviours and to set the foundation for a safe and successful adult life.

The stats

In an average year:

• We answer more than 70,000 calls to our 0800 What’s Up helpline – New Zealand’s largest helpline for children and young people

• We support more than 9,000 children through our Child and Family Services

• More than 4,000 under fives use our early learning centres and in-home childcare and education services

• Our social workers in schools help more than 400 children and their families to deal with issues and develop resilience

• More than 1,000 mums and dads gain skills and confidence through our short term parenting programmes like PAFT and HIPPY

• Our family support and counselling services help more than 2,450 children and their families to deal with a variety of challenging issues

• We connect with more than 2,400 families and whānau through our focused community outreach programmes

• Over 75 children are supported through our foster care programme

• More than 40 young people stay in our group homes.

Our funding

Our income comes from government funding, parent fees, corporate and philanthropic support, and the generosity of thousands of individual supporters.

Demand for our social services is high and government funding doesn’t meet the total cost of these services. To meet the shortfall, and to enable us to develop innovative new services, we rely on support from our donors.

Charitable status

Barnardos New Zealand is a society registered under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957, and is registered as a charitable entity under the Charities Act 2005 with the Charities Commission.
