COVID-19 media update, 21 May

The All of Government COVID-19 National Response provided an update at 1.00 pm today.

Questions from journalists included the following topics:

  • the new COVID-19 contact tracing app - including new registrations, how many people need to register for it to be effective, development of the app, businesses applying for QR codes
  • case numbers - including another day with no new cases, movement between alert levels, active cases in New Zealand, COVID-19 deaths  
  • gatherings for religious and faith based groups
  • testing - approach to testing as we move between alert levels, access to tests for symptomatic people and sentinel testing
  • contact tracing - including public transport, scaling up of contact tracing at public health units, Maori and pacific engagement
  • influenza vaccinations - ensuring continued supply for high risk groups, additional vaccines and their match to seasonal flu strains
  • border restrictions - opening borders to other nationalities, testing at quarantine and managed self-isolation facilities
